Bios: Origins (Second Edition): strategy and opening decisions

Three decisions to watch in the teaching game. These notes explain why a move can help, what it costs and when the position may call for something else.

Decision 01

Keep a route back to the market

Free Will is a practical resource: an available pawn makes another Elder or Emissary placement possible. A useful Idea can be difficult to exploit if every pawn is committed elsewhere. Compare the benefit of spending now with the next turn’s access to the market.

Decision 02

Separate Eureka value from retention

An Idea can be attractive for its immediate Eureka even when the species cannot yet retain it. Inspect requirements before treating it as permanent engine growth. Other invested colours may copycat, so the shared benefit is part of the decision, not an incidental bonus.

Decision 03

Reassess the ruling category

Track Culture, Politics and Industry alongside the Crown and the remaining Comets. Cities and migration can improve access, while Philosophy and the market can change what that access is worth. A plan should respond to the emerging end condition rather than assume all three domains score identically.

Test the idea at the table

This advanced, four-landfolk teaching game follows 99 consecutive turns to the final Comet. Follow the final category check in the tutorial rather than importing an older Moon-landing ending. The route uses the classic map, second dispersal and the March 2023 rules with documented component corrections.

Revisit a decision in the guided playthrough and compare its payment, position and next available action. The alternatives explain trade-offs; they do not branch into a simulated new game or promise a winning line.

Sources and scope

The tutorial uses the publisher’s March 2023 rulebook. Applicable corrected component faces come from Update Prints v4, dated 17 July 2024. The source audit was completed on 8 September 2026 and distinguishes publisher authority from secondary corrections.

Reading guide reviewed 2026-09-15; based on tutorial v1.0.4. This date records an editorial review of the existing tutorial, not a new rules edition. Strategic suggestions are conditional interpretations, separate from official rules.
