Spirit Island + Branch & Claw: strategy and opening decisions

Three decisions to watch in the teaching game. These notes explain why a move can help, what it costs and when the position may call for something else.

Decision 01

Grow an affordable hand and coordinate its timing

Compare extending a Presence track with reclaiming an already useful answer. Growth can increase income, Elements and card-play capacity, but its value falls if the current hand cannot answer the visible threats. Count the chosen cards' total Energy cost before play, including Slow Powers. River's Boon of Vigor resolves later in Fast and cannot make an earlier unaffordable payment legal. Its support can instead finance Lightning's next turn. River's Water and Sun can combine movement with Massive Flooding; Lightning can finish damaged buildings and earn shared Fear. Count Air before changing speed: one Air converts one Slow Power, and an innate also uses a conversion. Sometimes leaving destruction Slow catches a building created during Build. Choose a gained Power for useful Elements, legal range and an affordable effect, not its damage headline alone. A Major requires Forgetting an owned Power and can change both the hand and future thresholds. Community discussions support several growth and reclaim patterns; the current hand, ally support and public terrain determine which one is practical.

Decision 02

Prevent the next action and defend a shared island

Read the public terrain pipeline before assigning targets: the current Explore becomes a later Build and then a Ravage. Moving or removing an isolated Explorer before Build can prevent a building now and its damage next turn. That is valuable only when the receiving land and other threats remain manageable. Range comes from the acting Spirit's own Presence, so an ally's starting board is not off limits. Combine Dahan movement with a real defense or the removal of dangerous Invaders; Dahan do not absorb land damage and counterattack only after an actual Ravage they survive. Clearing inland Towns and Cities can also remove future Explore sources. You need not prevent every Blight at the expense of growth, but estimate the pool, cascade destination and Presence losses before accepting one. Fangs' Ranging Hunt cannot target Blight, making those locations especially relevant. Recheck Terror Level as Fear accumulates: at Terror II, surviving Explorers do not block victory. Decisions serve the team's current ending rather than a personal destruction score.

Decision 03

Budget expansion Growth, tokens and Event responses

Fangs and Keeper each take two different Growth options, so the order can matter. Keeper must pay three Energy for its costly option before receiving its benefits; an earlier income option may fund it. Fangs should compare Animal and Plant thresholds against the actual draft, nearby Beasts and safe Presence coverage. A Beast does not attack automatically, and converting too much Presence can make a later loss fatal. Wilds prevents one eligible Explore, Disease one eligible Build, and Strife suppresses one attached Invader's damage to land and Dahan; each is consumed at its own trigger. They are not interchangeable defense counters. Later Events can alter a prepared position before Fear and Ravage, so preserve affordable responses when the visible risks justify them. Joint Choice Events require the chosen payment; Aided-by Elements, discards and Forgetting provide specified credits rather than free Energy. Resolve the sections in printed order, since a later defense cannot protect an earlier extra Ravage. The expansion route demonstrates actual cascades while remaining Healthy. Forum advice from solo or higher-difficulty games remains conditional, and the reviewed indexed discussions are substantial but not an exhaustive strategy survey.

Test the idea at the table

Two original, complete two-player routes use the balanced A+B island, a normal Blight Card, and no Adversary or Scenario. Aria plays River and Rowan plays Lightning in the base route; Maya plays Fangs and Elliot plays Keeper with Branch & Claw. The base team wins on turn five at Terror II with eight Explorers, no Towns or Cities, 30 total Fear and three Healthy-card Blight remaining. The expansion team wins on turn seven at Terror II with three Explorers, no Towns or Cities, 37 total Fear and one Healthy-card Blight remaining. Both endings are shared victories. Fixed legal draws support teaching; alternatives explain decisions without branching the replay.

Revisit a decision in the guided playthrough and compare its payment, position and next available action. The alternatives explain trade-offs; they do not branch into a simulated new game or promise a winning line.

Sources and scope

English publisher base and Branch & Claw rules, the official FAQ and applicable card corrections were checked on 8 October 2026. Both original two-player routes use balanced boards A and B without an Adversary, Scenario or Aspect. Current clarifications include five initial Blight and discarding the first-turn Event without resolving it. Substantive indexed BGG Strategy posts and replies inform conditional commentary; direct BGG pages and a complete expansion Strategy listing were unavailable. Both routes finish while Healthy. Blighted-card resolution, Stage III and other endings receive labelled supplementary explanations; later expansions and alternative branches are outside these replays.
