Underwater Cities: strategy and opening decisions

Three decisions to watch in the teaching game. These notes explain why a move can help, what it costs and when the position may call for something else.

Decision 01

Compare the slot with the card

A colour match is valuable when the card helps the current position. A strategically important tunnel can justify a mismatch, especially if the opponent is about to occupy the needed slot. Compare the combined result, not simply the number of effects gained.

Decision 02

Build before the production that matters

An early connected building can pay in several productions; a late one may be purchased mainly for scoring. Include the tunnel cost and food requirement when evaluating a new city. An impressive disconnected network can be less useful than a smaller productive one.

Decision 03

Let scoring cards shape a feasible network

Special scoring cards and metropolises can give a direction, but buying a card does not guarantee that its requirements will be met. Reserve the credits to play it and compare its preferred buildings with the available slots. Museum rewards offer alternatives when a contested plan becomes too expensive.

Test the idea at the table

The tutorial covers two players using New Discoveries, Quick Start and Museum B. Quick Start begins in round two, so the complete route contains fifty-four turns through round ten, three productions and final scoring. Ordinary round-one setup and other expansion variants are outside this route.

Revisit a decision in the guided playthrough and compare its payment, position and next available action. The alternatives explain trade-offs; they do not branch into a simulated new game or promise a winning line.

Sources and scope
