Forbidden Stars: strategy and opening decisions

Three decisions to watch in the teaching game. These notes explain why a move can help, what it costs and when the position may call for something else.

Decision 01

Plan backward through an order stack

The top order resolves first. A sequence that looks sensible when placed can fail if the movement or production it needs is buried underneath. Consider opponents’ later placements and maintain another useful order to resolve when a desired system is blocked.

Decision 02

Secure access to the objective

Winning a combat is valuable when it creates a friendly objective world at the collection check. A garrison or controlled structure can matter after the attacking army leaves. Compare an extra battle with preserving the transport path and the territory already needed to win.

Decision 03

Use the faction’s actual tools

Different decks and unit abilities reward different engagements. Inspect a battle’s cards, casualties and retreat position instead of assuming higher attack strength solves every problem. The three-faction route demonstrates its own match-up; the omitted Eldar would change the available threats.

Test the idea at the table

The authored route follows Ultramarines, World Eaters and Evil Sunz through four rounds, forty-eight orders and seven combats to victory and the final tie-break. It uses standard board construction, not the introductory layout, with the official rules and FAQ v1.1.

Revisit a decision in the guided playthrough and compare its payment, position and next available action. The alternatives explain trade-offs; they do not branch into a simulated new game or promise a winning line.

Sources and scope
