Nemesis: Retaliation: strategy and opening decisions

Three decisions to watch in the teaching game. These notes explain why a move can help, what it costs and when the position may call for something else.

Decision 01

Prepare a return route while the crew can help

A faster outward path is useful only if it leaves a viable way back. Community discussions favor reinforcing exposed corridors near likely extraction and securing rooms while characters are together, especially when a frequent corridor number repeats. Those preparations can save later cards and ammunition, but they consume Actions now and do not prevent every Hazard, exploration or Event spawn. Watch the tutorial’s opening route and Life Support decisions, then compare the safety gained with the cards, Oxygen and remaining response capacity. Advice from a two-player game may apply differently when four roles can work together.

Decision 02

Budget cards, oxygen and specialist work together

Basic movement, room use and combat compete for the same hand. Two Actions can leave a character without a useful response to the next reveal, while extra turns can consume Oxygen. Functioning Life Support changes that budget. Match Shoot to room enemies and Burst to corridor enemies, inspect weapon condition and Ammo before committing, and preserve an emergency tool when its future value outweighs an immediate gain. Commands can use a teammate’s specialty but must respect rank, payment and the ban on actions causing Opportunity Attacks. Legal entry into danger still requires a practical exit plan.

Decision 03

Time the personal objective and extraction plan

Early cooperation can serve eventual private success by keeping the facility navigable and the crew alive. Before pursuing a conflicting goal, compare other players’ remaining cards, rank and ability to respond. An apparently clever disruption is insufficient if its author cannot survive. Boarding is also a timing commitment: the Lander can launch at the start of the Event phase, rather than immediately on entry. Preserve enough resources to reach an eligible exit, then follow Infection, Eclosion and the retained Objective instead of assuming that an escaped miniature has won. The authored mistakes demonstrate risk; they are not recommended optimal moves.

Test the idea at the table

This original four-player mission uses standard difficulty, Primebloods and the Primary Samples Mission Task. It follows nine rounds and all 72 turns through escape and the real endgame checks, with fictional players Mara, Nia, Tomas and Ivo. The route has fixed recorded outcomes and commentary; suggested alternatives do not generate another game.

Revisit a decision in the guided playthrough and compare its payment, position and next available action. The alternatives explain trade-offs; they do not branch into a simulated new game or promise a winning line.

Sources and scope

The English publisher rulebook, official FAQ v1.2 dated 8 June 2026, and Rooms and Objectives Help Sheets were checked on 30 September 2026. This original four-player route uses the base game, standard difficulty and Primebloods in semi-cooperative mode. BGG Strategy posts inform conditional commentary, separate from official rules. Other player counts, full cooperation, expansions and alternative branches are outside this mission.
