Inis: strategy and opening decisions

Three decisions to watch in the teaching game. These notes explain why a move can help, what it costs and when the position may call for something else.

Decision 01

Recruit with a destination in mind

More clans help only when their locations improve a victory condition, protect access or establish a useful majority. A single protected visitor can share sanctuary access without controlling the territory. Compare an extra recruit with the card needed to move it.

Decision 02

Draft the season you can actually execute

During the three-stage draft, held cards can be reconsidered. Look for a sequence that works with your present territory and likely opposition rather than valuing cards in isolation. The lesson shows complete packets but a player’s decisions should use only information they could know.

Decision 03

Prepare a claim that survives

A Pretender token announces an intention; opponents still have time to disrupt the condition. Count available Deeds and the Brenn’s role in a tie. Being close on two conditions may give more resilience than concentrating every clan into one easily disturbed requirement.

Test the idea at the table

The base route follows three Seasons and the fourth Assembly. The separate Seasons of Inis route uses three players, sea travel and the King tile’s final Season. Both use the 2025 English third-edition rules and current card effects.

Revisit a decision in the guided playthrough and compare its payment, position and next available action. The alternatives explain trade-offs; they do not branch into a simulated new game or promise a winning line.

Sources and scope

The source audit uses the 2025 English base and expansion rulebooks, with corrected component faces and documented designer clarifications. Sources were checked on 8 September 2026.
